Dragon Design for Concept art contest.
I created this design of a Dragon for an online contest. I know It's different from what I've been producing lately but creating different sort's of creatures Is an interest of mine that I plan on pursuing on the spare time of my portrait painting career.
Anatomy study on Wacom Tablet
I am beginning to work digitally now to get Into some of the commercial aspects of becoming a painter with versatile skills In this day and age. This was a rather straightforward study of anatomy using the digital wacom tablet which although has a big price tag I thoroughly enjoy and appreciate. I copied the study from a book called Anatomy for the Artist by Sarah Simblet published by DK books. I also decided to add a grey tone background to keep my values flat and have a nice mid-tone to work on. I was originally working on developing form on the skeleton but decided to abandon the notion midthrough the project, I thought It best since It's a study that I focus on form development.

Julian Plate Study
Plate study after Julien, this Is one of the earlier Julien plates that should be completed the work Is much cleaner and focuses on developing form. While the later plates bring a focus towards mark making and establishing tone on the figure. I tried something new this time I used soft vine charcoal to establish proportions and dimensions accurately before I went In further with the graphite. I recommend this because It Is much easier to wipe away any mistakes of proportions when starting off.
11x14 graphite and vine charcoal on 90lb Canson drawing paper. After Bernard Romain Julien.

Drawing course plate page 5
Finished another plate from the Drawing course book the overall masses and shapes were not as difficult this time around. The challenge for me laid In establishing the line clean and getting a cleaner look, there were several mistakes made the first run around so I had to go back and fix them. The lesson learned Is not only how to draw a foot but the process of drawing and different tools to use. Next plate study I am going to use vine charcoal first and then get detailed with graphite. Graphite on 90lb toned paper.

I completed a quick sketch yesterday of a house for a friend, I used a photograph and It felt strange doing so. As easy as It may be I prefer to work solely from life I am much more comfortable with seeing light and form In front of me and not from a photograph, the information Is to flat. Graphite on toned paper Canson 90lb.

Study of Roses from Life.
I recently completed a study from life a vase with roses I initially began the study excited to improve my understanding of drawing from life. My biggest obstacle came from drawing the roses themselves I established the contour forms of the vase and the roses but getting the intricate details of the roses themselves Is what started to throw me off. Things became even more difficult when I established my highlights using the guache. The paint dried to quickly and I was not able to build up to my lights. Next time I will apply a small amount of the material and slowly build up to my lights. Another Issue I came across after toning the watercolor paper is that It came out much darker than I expected I've learned for next time to tone back on the watercolors and keep the values lighter. I am going to do my next study from another Bargue plate to work on accuracy and defining form I will use the canson toned paper 90lb untill I can nail toning the watercolor papers correctly. All In all a good study that I've learned much from, I look forward to the next challenge and to anyone that Is reading this I invite you to open the discussion and send me your thought's and critiques.
The Drawing was done on hot press watercolor paper 12x16 sheet I toned the paper using the following watercolors cadmium red, winsor voilet, and naples yellow. When the paper dried I laid some amber shellac on It for that "old master" look. I then completed the study using wax based pencils and graphite pencils. For the highlights I used gouache Zinc white, and permenant white and I added some naples yellow watercolors for a little bit of tone.
